The child of previous South African President Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked accusations at the commencement of her court case in the port city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she posted on social media four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.

A week of anarchy in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been charged of encouraging this turmoil and faces accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Proceedings

The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's arrest for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an probe into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.

She has repeatedly rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier describing the government's case as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her father after he established his own political party and ran against the ruling party.

Support and Legal Defense

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the ex-leader and his family.

A few of followers from her party, her party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her father and other group representatives attended the proceedings inside.

The defendant's representatives has maintained that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling grounds for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Case

  • Digital comments from the past form the foundation of the government's evidence
  • Violent unrest in recent years resulted in significant deaths and economic destruction
  • The accused faces multiple allegations of incitement to unrest
  • Court hearings are projected to continue for multiple days

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judge in what is anticipated to be a closely watched court case with substantial policy ramifications for South Africa.
