American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
